Label/Format: MCA – first issue ‘dogbone’ format with matt, gently textured surfaces. These early MCA albums were pressed to the highest standard by Decca.

Label Conditions: Clean, fresh and attractive examples with a couple of small dots on side two, most likely in manufacture. Spindle marks are few, mostly fine and faint as seen under angled light.

Rarity: First issue pressings of this rock classic are scarce. The MCA label format and colour was changed many times and never too easy to keep up with. Up to the black label format, and those inbetween to around 1974, they were pressed by Decca, these invariably offer the cleanest and most detailed sound.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Debut album from these dual lead guitar rockers, a great band in their early days and this one remains one of their finest ever albums. If quality guitar-driven rock is your type of music, this splendid album will please. It has only six tracks with side two being occupied by the lengthy ‘Handy’ and the equally long, classic ‘Pheonix’, the two centre pieces of this set. This first-issue format example is in lovely condition with clean and impressive sound, it should please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Moore & Mathes Ltd, again this being correct for a first printing. Subsequent ones were made by Robert Stace. Includes the polylined Decca-style inner sleeve.

Cover Front: In terms of real wear, this has amongst the least I have yet seen, this is never an easy cover to find this clean. An attractive front that has hardly aged, being clean, fresh and hardly marked. There is a little gentle creasing to the top corner areas, but with very modest light visibility, any marks are few and very faint also. No sticker issues, this front sets a high standard.

Cover Back: Similar again without the creasing, the lack of ringwear is another major plus as well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Hardly any real wear, but a few light creases, mostly seen near the centre top.

Top Edges: Both barely worn, mostly straight, neat and flush.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, little to fault. Storages edges on unprotected gatefolds seldom fare this well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring minimal and very light indeed, even viewed more critically end-on. Record enters on the back edge and both are untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with a little gentle compression here-and-there, also a gentle tilt to left. However, this is not crushed, and being quite thick, few will remain bolt upright. A little quite light patchy rubbing on the top fold, the main surface largely escaping, so the text is largely all present with any clipping tiny as seen.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny and very light, very fine to excellent shape is retained with no bashes or dinks of note.

Cover Summary: This is difficult cover that seldom wears well, the Moore & Matthes originals are the most elusive and with the thicker spines, especially so. This has aged well, a little creasing, but not much else overall. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a Decca-pressed MCA copy includes it’s polylined inner. Gently aged with the usual seam adhesive darkening. The lining is very clear as seen through two very crisp undamaged window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs. British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text, also date-coded 8-71 (August 1971). The next pressing on the black and blue diamond format came along in 1972.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: at least. This record has two very impressive playing surfaces with any surfaces traces ultra fine, wispy and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches at all and this fresh, shiny Decca-pressed MCA record plays as fine as it looks. One to please many, if not most collectors

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays above it’s visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. The sound on the earliest pressings always seem a little more ‘open’ than later ones. Any surface sound minimal and faint, hardly anything, and no tracking issues*. An album with some quiet passages, but a very enjoyable copy, you rarely have problems with Decca-press albums, for me the finest UK manufacturer bar none. Nothing of any note spoilt a highly enjoyable play-grade, not had one of these for a while, it should please many, if not most collectors again.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
