I use the following grading system: (This is a guideline only as, unless a record has been played through to check, there is no guarantee it will sound the way it looks - ie a record that looks perfect can still have faults and a record that looks like the surface of an ice rink can still play very well!)

NM Near Mint - the vinyl looks in immaculate condition with few signs of having been played and the sleeve looks almost as new with crisp edges and no wear or tear or fading of colours.

EX+ Excellent - The vinyl is in excellent condition with only a couple of hairlines or small surface marks. As with nearly all vinyl there could be the odd random tick. The cover might have very minor wear and tear or the odd tiny scuff or stain.

EX Excellent - as EX+ but with a few more hairlines. Slightly more scuffing on the sleeve, but still very minor.

EX- As EX but marginally worse. Cover still excellent but with the odd corner or edge scuff or small crease.

VG+ Very Good Plus - Vinyl will show more signs of play and include surface marks and lines which may produce some light clicking on a couple of the tracks or some background crackle. Sleeve will have some wear and tear like light scuffs, slight ringwear or discolouration.

VG Very Good - As VG+ but with slightly more marks/lines. Sleeve will have slightly more wear and tear etc, slight discolouration, maybe even a small, light biro mark or a deletion cut or hole.

G Good - The vinyl shows signs of heavier play and will have surface marks and light scratches which may produce louder clicking and crackle and possibly jumps or sticks on some of the tracks. There could be distortion and sound deterioration. The cover could have numerous defects such as creasing, ringwear, tears, discolouration, writing and scuffing.
