Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the lesser-mentioned ‘classics’ from this famous music year. Originally formed as a 1920s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their nichè elsewhere. This debut album, dedicated to King Kong, from the British kings of British satire from this time. A brilliant album, my personal favourite of the few they made, and I never tire hearing it. It includes some absolutely wonderful songs, witty, catchy and, of course, a little eccentric, all are priceless gems – the Bonzos at their absolute best. Comedy and satire are blended with zany Vaudeville jazz, pop and psychedelia. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became relatively popular in the late 1960’s and even had regular television appearances on programmes like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’. They even had a hit single later with ‘The Urban Spaceman’. The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué – all in typically ‘British’ style. Wacky, zany, inventive and original, this is great entertainment. This copy on offer is an early mono on the blue Liberty label. The record has some marks, a couple emit a few, mostly brief clicks, but the music is mostly very clean and fully focused with no mono distortion or surface noise. So not for the highly discerning or perfectionists who are intolerant of a few clicks or blemishes. But the vast majority of this early copy plays impressively, or I would not offer it. One I still enjoyed considerably.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single format with a laminated front, this covers the folds and ends on the back via the spine. The back is smooth and matt. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. The back also has a small black sticker to warn of this copy being mono. Includes the polylined inner sleeve but no book with this one.

Lamination & Front: A very fine looking front with the laminate retaining excellent fresh shine and clarity. No lifting and minimal traces of dulling, even under light. A few gentle half moons and some mostly fine edge hairline creases that few will avoid. The white areas has minimal traces of yellow or toning, overall an impressive looking front.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has aged a little more with some mildish discolouration, toning or grubbiness, mostly near the edges. But in context this is only light and politely reminds of its vintage. Hardly any rubbing and creasing minimal, again mostly near the edges. Quite an unusual warning sticker to denote a mono record, especially as the front clearly states at such.

Top Edge: Largely straight with barely any wear.

Bottom Edge: Same again, any thickening to the card panel end is light, overall this storage edge remains neat.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Still mostly solid – there is one moderate crack – straight with patchy compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn as seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no bashes.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this zany 1960s cover. With only polite hints of age, this attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a Polydor polylined inner sleeve and date coded 078 (August 1968). Moderately aged with paper darkening, both window circles neat and undamaged, the lining still reasonably clear. Minimal creasing and just one neat, small edge split repair, the others fully intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: a very respectable visual copy that is generally clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Some marks, mostly surface ones that have no affect on sound, but a couple of small scratches do emit a few brief clicks – so this is not for purists or the more discerning who are ‘click intolerant’. Mono records were always more prone to marks as the equipment they were designed for tracked at considerably higher weights. But as the vast majority of this record plays really well, I just had to offer it. Visually a fine record that should please many collectors, but I state again, not for those who want perfect or very close to.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant debut album does play mostly above its visual grading with little else to really fault bar a few clicks each side from a couple of small, but penetrating stylus marks. It still offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are ignored and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The clicks are brief, but audible, but with the vasts majority of this record playing impressively, it is one I felt has to be offered. I know some collectors of such old mono albums will expect a few brief blemishes and can handle them – but equally, I know many want near perfection, and this record is not that this time. But with far more positives than negatives, this is still a very decent record and I still enjoyed it. So a highly respectable mono copy to please some – but not all – cautious recommendation is merited.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
