Rarity: Moderately scarce as a first issue, the concensus of opinion, this pressing is slightly later. But in real terms is much rarer than all others, in fact, this was only pressed in relatively small numbers, quite why on the label when the others are on Chrysalis, not sure to be honest. The best clues are, most copies were pressed by Philips, but as seen below, this was pressed by EMI, and this includes very early stampers in the run. For sure, timing and a fair degree of luck had to apply to buy one of these when made. They have always been elusive and quite prized by Island collectors, this the first copy I have had for a considerable time. This a copy and pressing as well.

Brief Info: The third Jethro Tull album, now with a heavier, more rocky sound. Less lauded by many being sandwiched between the stunning ‘Stand Up’ and the very popular, more progressive sounds of ‘Aqualung’, this is actually one of my personal favourites and including some fantastic songs. The first pressings of this album were made on the green Chrysalis label and included the i logo and ILPS number. A small few, as per this copy, were also pressed on the Island pink rim label, these are quite rare, and seldom seen compared with Chrysalis copies. This copy superbly pressed by EMI, it appears hardly played and offers fantastic clean sound, on this basis alone, it should please most collectors, being something of a curio pressing on the highly collectable Island label makes even more appealing.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the correct Island ILPS number and prefix. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes a blue Island innern sleeve with the Basing Street address.

Cover Front: This has always been a very wear-prone cover, this has fared quite well with most of any wear on the corners and traces elsewhere. Slight rubbing is rarely avoided, any rim impression or rim rubbing light. So only gentle hints of age, this front, which has also avoided sticker issues, will not prove too easy to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is actually a little better showing less wear than most. Light rim area rubbing only, the construction a little off-square in manufacture, this nothing to do with wear of course.

Top Edge: Although thin, it remains straight with only a little rubbing towards the right.

Bottom Edge: Moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with any thickening or burring light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression little and light. The surface has darkened with age with a little rubbing near the top. The text has survived almost fully intact and well centred as seen.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with mostly fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover, especially with a thicker, heavier early-made record inside. This one has survived better than many, it gives clues of age, but should still should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down a little for a surface scuff on the back near the bottom right corner. This EMI-pressed Island record has the blue polylined inner sleeve as seen. It has the ‘basing street london’ address. Mainly clean with deep colour retained, that more unusual, it has some darkening near the edges of the seam adhesive areas, but minimal creasing, only fairly gentle crinkle. The edges mainly intact, one side has thinned a little, there are no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with impressive shine and solidly pressed. Under my bright grading lamp, mostly very fine and light surface marks that do nothing. No penetrating stylus marks,this record plays superbly with little unwanted at all. No pressing rasps or invisible nasties, visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: EMI-pressed, this quality, and considerably rarer Island pink rim record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been reasonably well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. An important UK Island label variant that is elusive and in-demand by collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
