Brief Info: A return to form on a new label after the final Elektra album ‘For Sale’, which for me, was a disappointment after the sublime ‘Forever Changes’. But how could any band follow that? This expansive double set has mixed style material but with an emphasis on psych-rock and includes some impressive guitar-work. A very first issue in impressive condition, it should please many, if not most collectors, fans and Harvest enthusiasts.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A gatefold format with front and back laminate. The inside is smooth and matt. The front has the rare original pre-decimal introductory 57/6 price sticker in immaculate condition as-seen, few of these will be found now (or better). Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the white inner sleeves.

Lamination – Front & Back: Another of the classic early Harvest covers with no text printed on the front or back. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with only quite light dulling seen under light or the rim areas which vintage double albums rarely escape as the barest minimum. No lifting and any creases few and light. The promotional Blue Thumb on Harvest sticker is superb with its 57/6 (approx £2.87) introductory price. This clean, fresh, unpicked or removed – this rarely seen now.

Cover Inner Gatefold: One small toned pull mark and tiny traces of spotting or set-off to politely remind of age, that apart, this matt inside has little else to fault.

Top & Bottom Edges: A couple of small corner tip rubs only. Then all unworn, smooth, flush and straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening little and light seen viewed end-on. Records entered on these edges and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. No text was printed on this spine (or anywhere on the outside faces) and the artwork is unworn, faded and fully present under the solidly intact laminate. This is also one of those spines where the laminate tends to crack and flake which this has avoided. A light natural recess only simply formed by opening.

Corners: Any tip rubs mostly small and light, no knocks and mostly excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this scarce early 1970’s Harvest cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. With few blemishes overall and including the rare original pre-decimal price sticker, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): two solid plain white unlined inners that have aged little. The paper still white with minimal darkening, traces on the seam adhesive areas are nigh-on impossible to avoid over this amount of time. Minimal creasing, only light rim impression, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. These without doubt, hardly played with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light – hardly anything really. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually lovely records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality double set plays up to and mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early first UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this set has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this arguably under-appreciated album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
