This album isn’t more of an album, than it is a love letter to Syd Barret, Pink Floyd’s former member, even the art cover expands that point. A commentary on losing someone you love, loneliness, and the fear of living in a capitalist society, are all the very real topics in Wish You Were Here. The first song, Shine on You Crazy Diamond (part 1) is very reminiscent of Dark Side of the Moon, Richard Wright’s organ piano, the gospel singers, the feeling of flying above a desert, the loneliness, the song says so much without having to say anything at all, until the lyrics kick in at the very end and encompasses the entire record. The 2nd song: “Welcome to the Machine” in my opinion, is about the pressures of modern society, how you have to conform to a job you don’t want to do, and how it’s generally near impossible, to do something you want to do in your life, only to do what’s accepted and seen as good in the public eye, how were controlled by corporate overlords who decide what we do and don’t do... Welcome... to the Machine.
