The discographies on the back covers tell us these were all recorded between 1925 and 1929, during Prohibition, before the Depression.

Since they were likely recorded from original 78’s, here and there we hear some static.

Louis Armstrong is like a God of the music of the party.  Here he follows the ladies, singing of their broken hearts, vengeance, warnings, and adds his personal flavor to the stories.  And then, he lets us know he’s always crouching like a tiger, waiting to cut loose with a blast from that cornet (I think just 2 songs with trumpet).  Maybe a little double-time, maybe a speeded up run.  He’s not just backing up a singer, he has to let you know he’s got this.

Most of these women recorded extensively.  They can tell a story that you want to hear.  Armstrong and his very special accompanists just add a distinctive element that makes these selections special.
