You are bidding on an LP Vinyl issue of the Bob Weir’s 1972 solo album, “Ace.” (Warner Brothers BS 2621). This LP is on the “Burbank: version of Warner Brothers Records, with a Dead Skeleton on the actual label. It appears to be a 1973 issue. (See Photos).
Almost all of these songs ultimately made it to the Dead live Setlists. Although technically a solo record, the other members of the Dead backed Weir on the album. Featured on Ace are, “Playing In The Band”, “Mexicali Blues”, “Cassidy” and “One More Saturday Night.” We purchased this item decades ago, played it (and enjoyed it!), and it has been sitting in our home (vertically) for the last few decades.
The LP is in VG+ condition with some light markings, and the LP cover is in very nice shape, with signs of wear especially around the corners. (see Photos). The inner sleeve contains a promo that used to come with Warner Brothers LPs, where you could send them $2.00 for a double LP sampler of various Warner Brothers releases.
Please remember that this album was well taken care of, but it was played as part of our record collection decades ago. We have tried to show the LP Cover flaws with pictures posted in this listing.
This item has been stored at room temperature, in a smoke free home. Please see photos of actual item being sold.
Bob Weir: Ace (1972)
“Much like Garcia, Bob Weir's first solo album is a stone cold classic made up of songs that are mostly Grateful Dead songs. Unlike Garcia, Bob uses the Grateful Dead as basically his backing band. Jerry doesn't appear on Walk In the Sunshine or Cassidy while Phil doesn't appear on Greatest Story Ever Told or Cassidy. New Riders' bassist Dave Torbert plays on Greatest Story Ever Told while Snooky Flowers, Luis Gasca and The Space Rangers add horns to Black-Throated Wind, Mexicali Blues and One More Saturday Night. Ed Bogus does the string arrangement for Looks Like Rain. This was also the first album to feature Keith and Donna Godchaux on a Grateful Dead project.
Six of the eight songs were already in the Grateful Dead's set lists with Cassidy making it's first one off appearance on 3/23/1974 (eventually released as Dick's Picks Volume 24). It wouldn't become a standard in the band's set lists until June 1976 and would last until the end. The version here is embryonic with only Bill on drums, Keith on piano, Bob on acoustic & electric guitars and vocals while Donna adds harmony vocals. Only Walk in the Sunshine would never be played live and even it isn't all that bad although it's the weakest one here. Playing in the Band has one of, if not the band's best, in studio jams. Black-Throated Wind was played heavily through 1974 but retired until 1990 when it came back into rotation. Greatest Story Ever Told was also heavily played through 1974, retired until February 1979 when it returned into active rotation”.
