Vladimir Vysotsky (1938-1980), was a Soviet actor, poet, songwriter, and performer who was considered "the voice of the heart of a nation." His wide-ranging and forthright poems were considered subversive by the Soviet authorities and were barred from publication, but they were the cultural lifeblood for many Russians.

Vysotsky was an immensely popular figure who continued to be revered, read, and listened to long after his death. You might even compare his gravelly voice, use of slang, and hard-drinking lifestyle to that of the American singer Tom Waits. More than simply reflecting a difficult life reality, he gave many of his fellow citizens the strength to go on. He died of a heart attack at the age of 42, at which point the Soviet authorities allowed his recordings to be published.

Also included is a set of 18 postcards that tell about the life and creative path of Vladimir Vysotsky, from birth to death. Each postcard on the back is accompanied either by the full version of the poem (in contrast to this set, where the poems were given in abbreviations), or by a story about Vysotsky's theatrical and cinematic works. Photos by V. Plotnikov, A. Sternin, V. Murashko, from the personal archive of N.M. Vysotskaya and S.V. Vysotsky and others. The introductory article by R. Rozhdestvensky was reprinted in abridgment from the book "Nerve" (publishing house "Contemporary", 1982).
