Goldmine Grading Scale:
MINT (M)
Sealed, unopened record. Jackets show no signs of wear.
NEAR MINT (NM OR M-)
Vinyl is shiny, with no visible defects. No writing, stickers or other wear on the label, and no visible ?spindle marks?. Should play with no surface noise from scuffs, scratches, or groove wear, as none should be present. Jackets are free of creases, ring wear and seam splits.
EXCELLENT (EX or VG++)
Better than Very Good Plus, but not quite Near Mint.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+)
VG+ records will show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as light spindle marks around the center hole. There may also be some light ring wear or discoloration.
A VG+ jacket might have some minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, and may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking.
Very Good (VG)
VG records may have groove wear that is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a song?s intro and ending. But, the noise will not overpower the music otherwise. Records may have writing, tape or a sticker can detract from the label.
VG jackets will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover may be present. Heavier creases might be visible. Seam splitting may appear on all three sides and they may have written or stamped markings.
Very Good Minus (VG-)
Better than a Good (G) rating, but not quite Very Good (VG).
Good (G)
A Good (G) record will play through without skipping, but it will have significant surface noise from visible groove wear, heavy scuffing and scratches. The label will likely be worn, with significant ring wear, heavy writing, or other obvious damage. A Good jacket will have ring wear to the point of distraction, seam splits obvious on sight, and may have heavy writing across the front.
Fair (F)
Fair (F) records will have imperfections heavy enough that cause them to skip or repeat during playback. Jackets will be heavily damaged, and they may have seam splits to the point that they will no longer hold the record.
