HARVEY MANDEL

CRISTO REDENTOR

PHILIPS PHS 600-281

Stereo

1968

I bought this LP new in December 1968.

Cover - Shrink on.  EJ Korvette D in a circle stamped on back cover, top right.  It’s a blue stamp on the shrink.  No writing, no cardboard splits.  Light corner bumps, but little other shelving/handling evidence.

Vinyl - Some rubs/ finger smudges, nothing that affects play.

Sleeve - Paper, Philips/Mercury/Vertigo.  Not the original with this album.  It has a clipped corner and a date printed at that corner - 11-30-1974.  But it is Philips.

Deadwax:

Side 1:  PHS600281A-   M3     l l - l        3D        M.R.

Side 2:  PHS600281B-   M3      l - l          3D      MR

Pressing Rings 70mm

Vinyl weight 4 3/4 oz, 133-134g

The MR in the runout indicates this was pressed by the Mercury Record Manufacturing Co.

3D is a mystery.

On the back cover, the second last line of the credits has Eddie Hoh as the primary drummer.  Coincidentally I recently saw he was also the drummer on Donovan’s Sunshine Superman album.  Looked him up.  He played with a LOT of noted groups.

Most sites have this released in 1968.  One states November 1968.  This very likely is a first (only?) pressing.

The back cover at the bottom has Graham Bond playing piano on “If You Could Tell Her.”  That song title is not listed on the labels or in the Side 2 lineup above.  “You Can’t Tell Me” is listed in the Side 2 lineup, and on the label.

Harvey Mandel came to notice with Charlie Musselwhite’s band in 1966.  With this album he began releasing under his own name.  What a record it is.

Unlimited talent showcasing his extensive range.  He draws you in.

You don’t think of exciting guitar when you hear Wade In The Water.  Not until Harvey gives his version.  Blues, Rock, Jazz, it’s all on this LP, haunting, weaving, good luck describing this.

I’ve kept it in nice shape for you.
