Glory Bells. Century Rendezvous. Sound of Scandinavia Records(SOSLP 119). 1984. OG 1st Pressing. Sweden Import.
The early 80s were a rocking time, in no small part due to heavy metal's still fairly close relationship to its hard rock roots, though by 1982 the line separating the two was getting fairly clear. As something of a lagging indicator, certain noteworthy players in the grand expansion of heavy metal were often shying away from evolving too quickly, hence the more Deep Purple-tinged flavor of certain adherents to the NWOBHM such as White Spirit and Demon. This tendency of looking backward while also moving forward was not unique to the British scene, as a fair number of early members of Sweden's competing scene saw fit to proceed with baby steps while also occasionally hanging back and reminiscing upon the exploits of the previous decade. Though perhaps best remembered as featuring the same drummer that made an appearance on Ygnwie Malmsteen's famed 1981 demo, Glory Bell's Band (known later simply as Glory Bells") made a respectable splash in the metal world during the first half of the 80s, albeit while often displaying a stylistic inclination that would more readily be associated with something that came about 5 or 6 years earlier.
Granted, circa 1982 when this outfit unleashed their debut LP Dressed In Black, Malmsteen was still a largely unknown quantity, but anyone who would have heard this album would have noted the strong drumming featured here, but would have been far more taken by the outlandishly powerful and flamboyant vocal display put on by front man Göran Ove Nordh, also known as Glory North. For all the impressive bells and whistles going on around him, this avid impresario can't help but steal the show at just about every turn, laying in glass-shattering high notes like they are going out of style. His high, falsetto-steeped wails definitely draws some comparisons to the 70s incarnations of Rob Halford and Ian Gillian, yet when singing in his lower and more natural register, has more of a husky quality to his voice that could almost pass for Eric Adams with a Swedish accent. Nevertheless, this outfit is more than the man leading the charge, and with a triple guitar assault in two, this outfit takes a fair number of occasions to augment their assortment of early metal and hard rock sound with some twin lead work reminiscent of Thin Lizzy and UFO, and occasionally even shows some elements of prog rock here and there.
