"It's been far too long since the last Bully 7", and now this immaculate imprint is back with a fresh offering from Non-Prophets producer extraordinaire Joe Beats. A sampler from the cd album 'Diverse Recourse' this effortlessly shows how Beats manages to sidestep the whole instrumental hiphop genre and do something all of his own. Clues came from last year's surprising 'Indie Rock Blues' where he reworked songs from his favourite indie artists - showcasing a knowledge far beyond what is usually expected from hiphop producers. Kicking off with 'Fade' we're instantly shown that the man knows how to make twisted pop, and subtly using a sampled vocal he constructs a track which puts Shadow's recent work to shame. The biggie for us though is the flipside - an upbeat sample-heavy joint that reminds me of prime-period RJD2, at its core this is indeed a hiphop record, but listen carefully and you'll realise it's a whole lot more. heavy!"
