Brief Info: Magna Carta were a London prog-folk act that made four albums for Vertigo, three of which appeared on the hugely collectable Spiral label. Their debut was on Fontana. This was the second one recorded on the Swirl format and the most difficult to find. A very fine set it is too, beautifully recorded and in very fine condition, the record plays lovely with a pressing worthy of the more delicate music.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front has two hinge folds that open to reveal the apples inside a gatefold. Printed and made in England and including the Spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clean and still fresh looking with just a small crease on the large top right flap corner. Small tip rubs and minor wear on the tab and recesss that few will avoid. A delicate single thickness front that has faired well over the years.

Cover Back: The back is very impressive with little wear at all, any rubbing on the very edges or corner tips. The lack of ring wear always good news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Any marks, creases or blemishes small and light the apples graphic look almost good enough to eat.

Top Edge: (cover with text facing upright). Solid and straight, this is a working hinge fold, hence a little rubbing on the back fold is hardly unusual. .

Bottom Edge (the Spine): Even better than above with little wear, and importantly, ALL text is nigh-on perfect and unworn as seen in my close-up pictures.

Left & Right Edge(s), and Type: The back of both have real ends, both are straight with hardly any wear. The front ones are quite neat with any thickening or burring only mild and light. There are no entrance edges as such as the record is stored from the inside which is accessible when either flap is open. Both top and bottom entrance areas inside are undamaged and crisp as well.

Corners: Light to around moderate tip rubs with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Just just gentle hints to remind of age and fragility, but just avoiding tears and damage with very little rubbing is a major result. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a generally clean and still reasonably fresh looking Spiral lined inner. Just a little quite light darkening of the seam adhesive and midly to the paper. Two crisp undamaged window circles and the polylining very clear secure. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality folk-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing as it needs to be with more gentle music. Few copies will outperform this pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive Vertigo record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
