After Keith Levene split from Public Image Ltd., he had the tapes for this album and so did Lydon and the rest of the band. Keith decided to do a private press of a few thousand while PIL was still negotiating the release. He figured he had as much rights in it as they did. The decision to release it in a plain white sleeve wasn't just cheap, it was part of the vision for the album. He also made about 10-20 very limited edition artwork covers which we sold exclusively in the Venus Records store. I remember one had a pair of old sneakers glued on the cover, I think another had a plate and silverware. Each one was different, depending on what was sitting around and could be added to the covers.
After a little while, the Lydon side of the band made a deal with Important Records (Relativity) to release the same thing with the black cover that is much more commonly seen. They also demanded he quit making these, but, by that time he had sold a bunch and it was mostly a done deal. It's sometimes called a bootleg, not as much because of the legalities involved, but because he sold a bunch of them to one of the major bootleg distributors at the time who sold it through his regular channels. And, face it, it looked like a bootleg anyway!
So, this is a still sealed copy of the legendary album taken from my old store's stock. Accept no Johnny Rotten come latelys and buy this original pressing!
For over 20 years, Venus Records was one of the top collector's stores in Greenwich Village, if not the world. I closed it down in 1999 and kept most of the stock in storage and have just recently started selling it off. There are still a lot of great items to come, so, you may want to put us on your watch list. I'm mostly getting out of the music business and doing online marketing and helping business owners with their strategies, but plan on keeping my good reputation in the music business intact. I started with music mail order in 1976, and now am back to doing mail order again. If you ever have a problem, contact me.
