Baron Elmo proudly presents a major head trip on vinyl from contemporary psych-pop masters MERCURY REV: their debut album Yerself is Steam, released in 1992 in the US by Sony, issued in this LP edition in the UK by the Mint Films label, now unavailable in all formats. This is unquestionably one of the best albums the Rev ever cut… a freaky vortex of swirling, spacy jamnation that may well open that third eye you never knew you had. It’s a heady blend of rocking wildness and psychedelic space-out, seasoning the heavy with a generous dose of the trippy to arrive at a unique art/pop amalgam, densely packed with sonic detail, that is nothing short of intoxicating. Sounds like they were heavily influenced by 60’s British psychedelia – then refracted that influence through a crazy-house mirror of yowling guitar, fueled by what I’m sure was a truckload of hallucinogens. Fans of the Flaming Lips (who Rev guitarist Jonathan Donohue joined for their In a Priest Driven Ambulance full-length) will be flat-out poleaxed by the lysergic-baked excellence of this album… as bold and audacious a vision of rock music as anybody came up with in the 90’s. Unfortunately, the sales just weren’t there, but Sony let Mercury Rev cut two more albums before dropping them from the label and deleting their titles from the catalog. Yerself is Steam has been missing in action on CD for nearly fifteen years... and good luck even finding another copy on vinyl! The record and cover both show slight wear, but this LP looks great and plays beautifully.
