The concept of New Chilean Song began in Chile in the early 1960s. The lyrics comment on life in today's Latin America, on social progress and struggle there. The Music is based on rhythms and instruments indigenous to Chile and Latin America. Inti-illimani specializes in playing many indigenous instruments found on the high plains of the Andes. They were on tour in Europe at the time of the 1973 military coup in Chile, and remained in Rome to carry on their work.
Their sound of six voices blended over flutes, guitars, mandolins and the Argentine bombo drum carry a message of freedom and justice for all people.
