Brief Info: The fourth Moby Grape album, now down to a trio after the departure of Bob Mosley. They went to Nashville and made this, arguably their rarest album in just three days, it was produced by Bob Johnston, best-known for working with folk/country artists that include Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Simon and Garfunkel. So a change in direction, but still a satisfying album. However, and predictably, it almost went unnoticed here in the UK with meagre sales. So, even with a back cover tear, I have to offer this very elusive UK original – the record being in very impressive and little-played condition. Certainly one for collectors who want scarce items with top sound, but not for the cover purist.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): simply because of the back cover tear (top left corner area), the front and all edges are superb. A single format with front laminate, this covers the folds and ends on the back via the spine. The back is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Quality Stationery Limited, London. Includes the CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Whereas the back has a small area of damage, the front is superb with little to fault. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity and has no lifting with hardly any creasing, any present being ultra fine and faint. Any dulling is only very mild as seen under angled light and the graphic is deeply coloured and totally unaged.

Cover Back: There is a moderate surface tear near the top left corner, but not a great deal else, so not for the cover purists. However, it has lesser visual impact due to here it is located, also as the cover is black and white and lies on a plain white area. Any discolouration is light and hardly any creasing again. As this album is so elusive, I have no qualms in offering it even with a little damage – you cannot play cover can you?

Top Edge: Straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Same again except small tip rubs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any thickening or burring. Record enters on this edge with no trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: Solid, but quite thin, straight with minimal compression. The text near perfect under solid intact laminate, small scuff traces near the very ends.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubs with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: The one significant flaw apart, a very strong example of this seldom seen UK cover, one that could still prove difficult to find much better. Not for purists, but it will please collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a couple of mild creases only, this unlined inner has aged little with no splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, mainly light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches and clean enjoyable sound. Visually a lovely scarce original record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This seldom-seen album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very first pressing significantly I feel sure – but was this ever repressed? – probably quickly deleted, hence the realistic catalogue value. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. I cannot explain the tear of course, but probably a bad attempt at removing a sticker. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this somewhat ‘lost’ record, this beings the very first time I have heard this album. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended (if the cover flaw is acceptable).

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
