Background -

De Dijk (English: The Dike) is a Dutch rock band which formed in 1981. The band is named after Zeedijk, a street in their hometown Amsterdam. Their music can be described as a mixture of soul, blues and rock 'n roll, with lyrics sung only in Dutch, except for their 2010 album Hold on Tight and the song 'Enough is Enough', both of which are sung in English by Solomon Burke. They are considered as one of the most important Dutch acts of the past 25 years.

De Dijk was formed by Huub van der Lubbe, who also is an actor and poet, his brother Hans van der Lubbe and Nico Arzbach. The band started in a time when Dutch language pop music became highly popular, with bands like Doe Maar, Het Goede Doel and Toontje Lager. Van der Lubbe performs as a poet as well. Perhaps as a consequence, the band is not only popular with teenagers but also with older people. During the 1990s, songs of De Dijk were a major source of inspiration for upcoming Dutch bands like Van Dik Hout and Bløf.

Niemand In Destad (Nobody in the city) is the fifth studio album of the Dutch band De Dijk, released in the autumn of 1988.

It was the album with which the band finally established their reputation. More than 100,000 copies were sold and songs like 'I can not do it alone' and 'Good for nothing "grew into fan favorites.

For this album, the band had the idea to make a soul album in the tradition of records made in the mid-sixties, without the use of dominating synthesizers and other digital tools. It was also decided that the LP would provide a clear flow and style, not like earlier records where multiple musical styles were combined.

In 1987 the band had just signed to Telstar when Doe Maar decided to stop making records. Because of this recording capabilities stagnated. Salvation came from Bart Sloot Haag, director of Wisseloord studios in Hilversum. At that time the studio was not rented so if was possible for the band to record their LP. Bart Sloot Hague forwarded the demos to Herman van der Zwan who worked at Phonogram Records. After listening to the demos, the band was given the opportunity to release an album.

The lyrics of all the songs were written by Huub van der Lubbe, whose lyrics were in the style of music written by Bruce Springsteen and Mink DeVille, and by Eddie Cochran who inspired 'What a woman."

Using a four-track recorder, the first ideas were developed, with a small selection of instruments like the drum machine, guitar and organ.

In some of their tracks wind instruments are heard and played by the Super groove horns, consisting of:
Saxophone - Jelle Oortman Gerlings Trombone - Martijn Sohier Trumpet - Angelo Verploegen, Ruud Breuls
On the front cover is a black and white photograph of a night scene where a man dressed in a suit, is slumped and located along the side of the road.  The photo was taken in the Warmoestraat Amsterdam by photographer Dolf Kruger in 1956. The cover displays the title and the central theme of the album; lonely and abandoned in Amsterdam, usually with love as the main cause. On the back is a black and white photo of Rob Marinissen showing the band members dressed in (black) jeans and leather jacket, a then recognizable style of the band.
