Brief Info: Classic blues-based rock from the Alvin Lee-fronted band, this was their fifth album and arguably, one of their very best – it’s my favourite anyway. A beautifully recorded and engineered album that captures Lee’s amazing, and fast, guitar-work. It proved to be the last they issued in mono, the stereo version gives the best effects by far, and it will seldom be heard a great deal better on this rarer first issue. The wear-prone matt cover is nice, but does have some wear on the spine as seen. The elusive poster is superb: it is unmounted and practically as-made. An album more often seen without it.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated, gatefold format with very matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse International Ltd, this one includes the very thick spine and early mono/stereo peep-hole on the back. This one is filled in blue by the inner denoting a stereo copy, the original inner being date coded 4-70 (April 1970), the exactly time of issue. The poster IS included.

Cover Front: Firstly, this is a quite soft card cover, hence prone to all forms of wear and is seldom seen without. Most of any wear on this one is on the spine edge, so this cover on the main faces actually looks considerable better than the overall grading. The front itself is very impressive with little to fault. Clean, fresh and attractive with any blemishes tiny and faint. The lack of rubbing, grubbiness and creasing are all positives this cover often has. No sticker issues either.

Cover Back: Largely the same with a moderate fade line near the spine. The mono/stereo peep-hole is perfect.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Lovely artwork as seen in close-up. Little to fault, a natural, and very gentle ‘wave’ to the right of the fold hinge is seldom avoided on covers with such wide spines, especially when the card is quite soft. A gentle hint of darkening being more critical.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat with minimal hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Any rubbing on these storage edges is patchy and quite light, then as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal thickening or burring, also guaranteed untrimmed. Record can enter on either edge as both are open, neither have any inside adhesive marks, this cover was made naturally open both ends, probably for the poster to have separate storage.

Spine and Text: Solid, largely straight, still upright and uncrushed with any compression mild, any tilt is very slight indeed. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely and very close to parallel. As mentioned already, some rubbing, this on the upper part of the central area as seen, resulting in some text erosion. A cover that seldom escape spine wear as a minimum.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs, again soft card, seldom avoided. Very fine to excellent shape retained without bashes or dinking of any real note.

Cover Summary: The spine rubbing apart, still a very attractive all-round example of this quite delicate early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. It should please many collectors, but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the blue Decca-style heavyweight inner is date-coded 4-70 and is guaranteed the original one that came with the record. Being blue, it fills the cover’s rear peep-hole to denote a stereo copy (monos were a shade of red). This has gently aged with mild darkening, mostly on the seam areas, these remain unsplit (with no repairs). Barely any creasing and both the window circles are immaculately crisp and sharp with the lining very clear and fresh with only gentle crinkle. An inner that has also withstood the years impressively well.

The Poster: NEAR MINT: a double-folded matt black and white poster printed on one side only. The white back has minimal traces of age toning or darkening. This is a fantastic example of this quite elusive original poster, being clean and still fresh. Hardly creased with very sharp edges and no tears or marks worthy of mention. This is unmounted (e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks), this is practically as-made and will prove very difficult to match or find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed on quality, pure Decca vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are no penetrating stylus marks and this offers impressive clean sound throughout. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very early first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
