Not least because of the titular reference to his year of birth, 'Eight One' is deeply, unashamedly nostalgic, flush with warm melody and blooming harmonics, coupled with the sugared vocals of Anomie Belle, and an unshakeable love of loping, '90s-style neck snap big beats all recalling vibes of yesteryear for anyone born in the early '80s. The four tracks starring Anomie are all highlights of the set, from the glorious IDM/Trance burn of 'D. Song' to the hippyish folktronic tenderness of 'Film Burn' - sounding like Joanna Newsom gone to the Glade - or especially on the widescreen, MBV-esque blazer 'Three Portraits'. That said, his instrumentals speak volumes, too. The likes of 'R. Mullen' bring back the halcyon daze of er… Moby, and 'Paper Knife' has a lovely, uplifting post-rock earnestness about it."
