Store Categories JED KURZEL Asassin's Creed (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) / 2x LP NEW VINYL / Decca 2017
"Judging on Kurzel’s work on MacBeth this is going to be a minimalistic and textural affair. ‘Abstergo Rooftop’ is just that, but it adds a layer of music that enhances the total experience. It’s quite beautiful. Same can be said for ‘The Animus Room’. Even though it’s a bit minimalistic, there are some really interesting action sequences in here. This works, it really works. Cues like ‘Sofia + Rikkin’ and ‘Bleeding Effect’ is out of touch with the action, but it’s a very pleasant ambient piece that somehow fits into Kurzel’s musical world. If I had to choose, I would say this is more similar to Jesper Kyd’s style than Lorne Balfe. Kyd’s music felt more electronic though and while Kurzel certainly use it as well, it’s a more orchestral approach that at the end of the day is chosen. I feel it works well, and I think the score overall will be interesting to hear in context. I really like the action pieces in this score. They have a calming effect which may sound weird, but just listen to them. The downward pitched synth sound is a bit Terminator-esque, but the overall action isn’t in-your-face or over-the-top, but some subtle and clearly defined action music. ‘Columbus Suite / To The Port’ is Jed Kurzel going overboard and even that is quite fun. In short, this is impressive and a step up from MacBeth in my opinion from Kurzel."
