Background -

Musica Antiqua Köln

Band, 1973-2007 DE - Classical

Ensemble founded by Reinhard Goebel and fellow students from the Cologne Conservatory, initially devoted to the performance of Baroque chamber and sacred music. In 1983 the chamber ensemble was augmented with additional string and wind players to allow the performance of orchestral music as well. From 1978 to its dissolution at the end of 2006, Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel have been Archiv Produktion exclusive artists.

Musica Antiqua Köln was an early music group that was founded in 1973 by Reinhard Goebel and fellow students from the Conservatory of Music in Cologne. Musica Antiqua Köln devoted itself largely to the performance of the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The group recorded extensively for Archiv Produktion and received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix International du Disque, Gramophone Award, Diapason d’or, and Grammy nominations.

The ensemble disbanded after more than 30 years of touring, recording and performing in 2007. Reinhard Goebel will concentrate on conducting larger orchestras in both ancient and modern repertoire. Musica Antiqua Köln's last recording for Archiv, 'Flute-Quartetts' by Telemann, 2005, was a collaboration with the Swiss recorder virtuoso Maurice Steger.

A final recording, Johann Friedrich Meister: Il Giardino del Piacere, forgotten by its performers and recording company, was issued in 2011. Advance publicity materials stated that its contents were recorded originally for televised broadcast in 2004.

Founded: 1973 - Cologne (Köln), Germany

For 26 years now, Musica Antiqua Köln (= MAK) and Reinhard Goebel have been associated with virtually every important musical centre and festival at which early music is performed. The ensemble is renowned for their lively interpretations of 17th- and 18th -century works and for their virtuoso and imaginative historical performance practice.

Founded in 1973 by Reinhard Goebel and fellow students from the Cologne Conservatory, Musica Antiqua Köln initially devoted itself to the performance of Baroque chamber and sacred music. Musica Antiqua Köln's international breakthrough came in 1979, when the ensemble made its debut at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall  during the annual English Bach Festival and gave five concerts at the Holland Festival. On the occasion of their 10th anniversary, Reinhard Goebel augmented the ensemble's chamber-group nucleus with additional string and wind players to allow the performance of orchestral music as well - both in the concert hall and in the recording studio. Since 1981, Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel have made regular tours of the USA, visiting Australia and South America several times and touring China in "Bach Year", 1985. Musica Antiqua Köln received the Buxtehude Prize from the City of Lubeck and has also received awards from Siemens and the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen. In 1981 the ensemble was named "Artist of the Year" by the Deutsche Phono-akademie.

Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel have been Archiv Produktion exclusive artists since 1978. Their innovative role in the discovery and realization of unusual early music repertoire has been acknowledged internationally, as is apparent from the group's numerous awards: for example their recording of chamber concertos by Telemann (Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 1981), the collections German Chamber Music before Bach (Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 1982) and The Bach Family before Johann Sebastian (Grand Prix International du Disque 1987), François Couperin's Les Nations (Grand Prix National du Disque 1984), chamber music by J. S. Bach (Gramophone Award 1984), Telemann's Tafelmusik (CD Compact Award 1990). Their recording of Johann David Heinichen's Dresden Concerti has won five major awards: the Jahrespreis der  Deutschen Schallplattenkritik 1993, the Gramophone Award 1993, the Prix Caecilia 1993, the Schallplattenpreis Echo-Klassik 1994 and the CD Compact Award 1994.

Musica Antiqua Köln's recent releases include a recording of Georg Frideric Handel's Marian Cantatas and Arias with Anne Sofie von Otter, which received the CD Compact Award 1995 in the "Baroque Vocal" category, and a compilation of works with a Parisian emphasis - Rebel's Les Elemens, Gluck's ballet Alessandro and Telemann's Sonata in E minor. In 1995, a collection entitled Concerti per l'orchestra di Dresda was released with works by J.D. Heinichen, Veracini, Johann Joachim Quantz, Charles Dieupart, Johann Georg Pisendel and Fasch. In 1996, the ensemble released a 2-CD set featuring sacred music by J.D. Heinichen, which includes the complete music for Holy Week, 1724: the oratorio Nicht das Band, das Dich bestricket and the Good Friday Lamentationes, together with short psalm arrangements and two church sonatas. 1996 also marked the release of the group's CD "Chaconne," a collection of varying composers' takes on that popular 17th-century dance form. The recording received rave reviews and was nominated for a Grammy Award. After Hasse's Salve Regina with Barbara Bonney, their latest productions are a 2-CD set featuring the Secular Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and their spring 1998 release, "Pro tabula," which includes music by Bertali, Schmelzer Biber, Pezel and Valentini.

Reinhard Goebel (born 31 July 1952 in Siegen, West Germany) is a German conductor and violinist specialising in early music on authentic instruments and professor for historical performance at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Goebel received his first violin lessons at the age of twelve. The teachers as a violinist were Franzjosef Maier, the leader of the Collegium Aureum, Saschko Gawriloff, an expert in difficult modern scores and with the baroque violinists Marie Leonhardt in The Hague and Eduard Melkus in Vienna.

In 1973 Goebel founded his early music ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln that he had led till its dissolution in 2007. He has been an important figure in early music and, for example, was instrumental in rediscovering the music of Johann David Heinichen and Jan Dismas Zelenka, court composers in Dresden.

He plays the violin left-handed (that is, reversed from the usual set-up) since some problems with his left hand meant he had to switch sides after he had already learnt the violin right-handed.

The German conductor and violinist, Reinhard Goebel, after leaving school, studied violin at the Cologne Conservatory with Franzjosef Maier, then with Saschko Gawriloff at the Folkwangschule in Essen, followed by an intensive course of study with Eduard Melkus and several years under the guidance of Marie Leonhardt. In addition, he studied musicology for several years at Cologne University.

In 1973, after pursuing musicology studies for several years at Cologne University, Reinhard Goebel founded the instrumental ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln, initially made up of fellow students from the Cologne Conservatory. It was here that he laid the foundations of his immense knowledge of early music, a knowledge that is amply reflected in his ensemble's concerts and recordings. Since that time, he has performed with the ensemble as both solo violinist and director, and has established himself as one of the leading exponents of Baroque historical performance practice. Actually, Reinhard Goebel and Musica Antiqua Köln have played an unprecedented role in increasing general awareness and knowledge of Baroque music. In 1979, the ensemble gained an international reputation with its debut at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall during the annual English Bach Festival. After unexplained paralysis struck his right hand, Goebel abandoned his career as a solo violinist, although he continued to play with his group, bowing the violin with his left hand.

Reinhard Goebel has an extensive discography for Archiv Produktion and has helped revive interest in the music of several previously under-performed German composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Johann David Heinichen, Schmelzer, Biber, and members of the Bach family. His recordings have won numerous awards: the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis in 1981 and 1982 (for chamber concertos by Telemann and German Chamber Music Before Bach, respectively); the Grand Prix International du Disque in 1987 (for The Bach Family Before Johann Sebastian); the Grand Prix National du Disque in 1984 (for François Couperin's Les Nations); the Gramophone Award in 1984 (for chamber music by J.S. Bach); and the CD Compact Award in 1990 (for Telemann's Tafelmusik). Goebel's recording of J.D. Heinichen's Dresden Concerti won five important awards: the Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 1993, the Gramophone Award in 1993, the Prix Caecilia in 1993, the Schallplattenpreis Echo-Klassik in 1994, and the CD Compact Award in 1994.

CONDITION Details: The 7-LP box is in near mint minus condition! The box has NO splits or crushed corners - just gorgeous! The corners and seams are solid with just some light shelf wear. The colors on the box are sharp and clean (see pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item). The set comes complete with a large format paper insert/libretto. The 7-LPs are in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP set. There are no significant marks and the LPs retain much of the original gloss and sheen - obviously well taken care of! They do have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on them so they should be cleaned before playing. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either. Just beautifully made vinyl! That said, acquiring a vintage LP like this is for the performance and rarity of the LP, not necessarily for the sound quality. A Short Note About LP GRADING - Mint {M} = Only used for sealed items. Near Mint {NM} = Virtually flawless in every way. Near Mint Minus {NM-} = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible. Excellent {EXC} = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise. Very Good Plus {VG+} = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.

LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).

Don't let this rarity slip by!!!
