The duo of Andy Baxter (vocals) and Kyle Jahnke (guitars and harmony) performing as Penny and Sparrow have never shrunk from confronting the uncomfortable, even if it’s sometimes difficult to decipher - if anything these guys are literary and complex, but the feel seeps through whether time is spent trying to figure things out or not. Their new album Wendigo definitely swerves to the darker side at least topically, with many images of death, horror novels, and unsettling legends. The sound here is stripped down as the songs were recorded at home in Florence, Alabama, with the intention to flesh things out further, but happy with the homemade result, that’s what ended up sticking here. The formula of Baxter’s beautiful and affecting voice coupled with Jahnke’s sympathetic playing and harmonies is essential to their composition. That doesn’t vary here, but what does differentiate is the tightness of harmonies and the songs with the accompaniment of lap steel and slide guitar that provide a shading that fits the mood perfectly. ‘Double Heart’ is a clear standout with Baxter and Jahnke singing so closely together as could only be achieved from years of perfecting their approach. The repeated line of “keep or let go, it’s worth it” asserting indifference but calling for a decision. Death makes appearance in physical form on ‘Visiting, Part 1’ with the greeting of “a certainty, taxes and me” and the line of “I’m just like you, I bend the knee” bringing forth an uncomfortable image. The steel guitar here and on the opener ‘Wendigo’ providing a mournful, but gorgeous tone. The repetitive guitar line of 'Kin' recalls a slowed down ‘Bread and Bleeding’ from 2014’s excellent Struggle Pretty album. ‘A Kind of Hunger’ is more insistent than most of the album with the command of “come care about me”, but on balance the album is calm and contemplative and will take you to that place if you let it.
