Dickie Goodman is often considered to be a founder of "sampling" (or "plunderphonics"). While there is some truth to the claim, it gives off the impression that the man was a musical visionary. What he is, in fact, is something akin to a morning radio DJ with a clever but ultimately predictable schtick. For example, on Goodman's biggest hit, "Mr. Jaws", Goodman appears to be interviewing Mr. Jaws, the shark from the classic 1975 Spielberg film. He says to the shark, "I know sharks are stupid, but what did you think when you took that first bite?" After asking the question, we get a drop-in snippet of the chorus to James Taylor's hit "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)". Next, Goodman says, "Mr. Jaws, before you swim out to sea, have you anything else to say?" He then adds a clip from the chorus to WAR's "Why Can't We be Friends?" You get the picture. Everything Goodman does follows this same formula. On the compilation "Mr. Jaws and Other Fables", Goodman's sense of humor is refreshing and, at times, quite keen.  For those expecting a 1950s version of Paul's Boutique, you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you want to listen to some clever, funny, but predictable and dated jokes, this collection is for you.
