Background -

It's a loaded name that could suggest a number of pop transgressions, from singsongy Warped tour debauchery or erudite Vampire Weekend frivolity to straight-up Mumford & Sons-inspired banality, but Brooklyn's American Authors manage to find the safe spaces in between, taking the most retail-friendly parts of each of those examples and spinning them into something that sounds a little bit like somebody put Fun. and the Lumineers in a mixing bowl and hit them with an immersion blender. The band's major-label debut, Oh, What a Life, is a big, unapologetically upbeat collection of indie pop anthems with similarly unrepentant commercial ambitions that comes off a little like a folksy One Direction. These are songs that refuse to remain incarcerated behind neon earphone buds. Key cuts like the uplifting opener "Believer," the heartfelt "Luck," and the spirited lead single "Best Day of My Life" were made to fly freely so that they may attach themselves to summer movie trailers, inspirational television commercials, and American Idol loser/winner/special-needs contestant montages. They are so on the nose that the seasoned, big summer pop anthem fan never has time to react with anything other than a begrudging respect for their complete lack of nuance. Whether they're mining the handclap-happy "Hey Ho" antics of the aforementioned Lumineers ("Luck"), rounding off the already polished edges of pop-punk with a little banjo ("Heart of Stone"), or simply repurposing big-moment group vocal-led Arcade Fire-isms (everywhere), they're doing it on their own, very shrewd terms, and without the cruel restrictions of subtlety. - James Christopher Monger

Offering up an emotional and propulsive mix of summery indie pop and meticulously crafted, commercial modern rock, Brooklyn-based American Authors fall somewhere between the arena-sized folk-rock of Mumford & Sons and the urban, heartfelt grandeur of Fun. The group broke big in 2013 with the release of the single "Best Day of My Life," which received significant airplay after appearing in a slew of high-profile commercials and film trailers.

Formed in Boston under the moniker Blue Pages, the founding lineup included Zac Barnett (vocals), James Adam Shelley (guitar/banjo), Dave Rublin (bass), and Matt Sanchez(drums). Although they met while attending the Berklee College of Music, the quartet eventually dropped out and relocated to Brooklyn. American Authors inked a deal with Island Records in 2012 and released the singles "Believer" and their eventual breakthrough hit, "Best Day of My Life," as well as their eponymous debut EP the following year. Oh, What a Life, the band's first long-player, followed in early 2014. By April, "Best Day of My Life" peaked on the Billboard 200 at number 14. The spirited single "Go Big or Go Home" dropped in May 2015 in anticipation of the group's sophomore studio outing. Four more singles were released before What We Live For arrived in July 2016. The next year, American Authors issued the single "I Wanna Go Out." After announcing the impending arrival of their third LP, Seasons, the band issued a trio of singles throughout 2018 including "Deep Water" and "Say Amen," the latter featuring Canadian singer/songwriter Billy Raffoul. Seasonswas released in February 2019 and also included the hit single "Neighborhood" featuring Bear Rinehartof Needtobreathe. - James Christopher Monger

Los Angeles-based musical collective the Mowgli's blend the Laurel Canyon folk and pop traditions of bands like the Byrdsand the Beach Boys with the quirky modern indie pop of bands like Fun. and Grouplove. Formed in 2010 around singer/songwriter Colin Dieden, the Mowgli's are a large ensemble that originally included members David Applebaum, Spencer Trent, Matt Di Panni, Josh Hogan, Andy Warren, Katie Earl, and Michael Vincze (who left the group in 2014). In 2012, they released their full-length studio debut, Sound the Drum, along with an EP, Love's Not Dead. They quickly returned a year later with their sophomore album, Waiting for the Dawn. In 2015 they delivered their third full-length album, Kids in Love, which featured production from Captain Cuts as well as Matt Radosevich. The Mowgli's continued to tour, hit the festival circuit, and in late 2015, supported the humanitarian organization The International Rescue Committee by releasing the single "Room for All of Us." Following the departure of guitarist Spencer Trent, the Mowgli's worked with producer Mike Green (All Time Low, Paramore) to record their fourth LP, 2016's Where'd Your Weekend Go? A non-album single, "4AM," arrived in February 2017. - James Christopher Monger ISLAND Def Jam RECORDS 7" Single item - FACTORY SEALED
