Big Brother and the Holding Company "Cheaper Thrills" LP Released in 1984 this album catches Big Brother live at the California Hall in San Francisco. 1966 was not a time when most bands were recording live albums. LSD was still legal and it showed up at all the SF concert halls. "Down on Me" is a personal favorite of mine and I would have bought it just for the one song. Everything I've read about Big Brother says they had a very difficult time sounding good in the studio. Like many bands there was in fighting and the drugs and drinking didn't help. There was also management problems while Janis just wanted to get out and sing. Many of the songs they recorded for there 'Cheap Thrills " LP were unusable by the record companies standards. The band was constantly on the verge of breaking up. Being in a blues band Janis didn't have expectations of fame and a glamorous rock star life. A couple of the guys in the band wanted exactly that kind of life but weren't willing to put in the time practicing to make the band good enough. 1966 was when things were still beginning to move in San Francisco and LA. It was the following year that would find a non-stop flood of young people to Southern California looking for a dream land with free sex and drugs. In 1966 the Dead, the Airplane, Quicksilver, Steve Miller and the list of bands that made the "San Francisco sound" were still finding their sounds. The Byrds were big along with the Turtles making music for the radio and not he 'acid tests'. It would all come together a year after this was recorded.
