For sale: The legendary Beatles' PLEASE PLEASE ME album on the extremely rare and desirable black and gold label.
This is not only a piece of Beatles history, but musical and vinyl history too.
And it's in very good condition, all round - definitely a keeper and a collection prize.
This is a legit mono black and gold label, released briefly in March 1963 (UK). These were only made for a few weeks (before Parlophone re-designed and changed its labels), hence why collector's are snapping them up.
The first and second pressings were on the black and gold label - this copy is extremely rare as it is actually a crossover pressing, bearing 'Northern Songs' credits on side 1 and 'Dick James' credits on side 2 (Northern Songs labels replaced the Dick James ones). You do not see many of these around.
The labels are very good, one of the nicer black and gold labels I've seen. Many suffer from excessive ring wear and fading etc - not this one. The outer sleeve is very good - still strong and sturdy with the spine in tact and no splits. It is also the 'correct' earliest sleeve with the Angus McBean photographer credit right over to the far side. There is some expected slight creasing wear to the bottom and rear bottom flip-back (all pictured), and a small 1 inch tear above the mono where the disc has been taken in and out. But these are minor flaws and overall it is impressive for its age. The emitex inner is present and original. Very good condition with no rips or splits. The vinyl, visually, is good. Be aware that both sides do bear a number of small marks and / or light hairlines in the strong light - side 1 has the most visible ones. But it's certainly good for its age, and a well looked after record. It plays through cleanly, without skips or jumps.
Both matrixes are -1N. Stampers are side 1 -1/GP (low) and side 2 - 12/GH.
I have owned this record for around ten years and it's only been played once or twice. Apart from that it's been stored away. I have tried to give an honest written assessment - perhaps underselling it, slightly cautiously. So please refer to the pictures as well as the text for an overall description.
The record will be well packed and sent special delivery (please note the free postage option applies to UK only).
