Frank Sinatra greeted 1964 and the Beatles' challenge to his pre-eminence with this collection of movie themes. Despiteappearances however, this is no commercial paste-up job. The songs themselves are an oddly varied lot, more a nod to some of Frank's favourite singers--Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Doris Day--than any comprehensive attempt at covering Oscar-winning tunes over the years. SINGS DAYS OF... is the swinging complement to 1963's stately The CONCERT SINATRA, which featured an equally idiosyncratic collection of Broadway showtunes.
The mood here is buoyant, the music sparkling as Sinatra confidently swings his way through the majority of the set, slowing down only for mid-tempo readings of "Three Coins In The Fountain", "Secret Love" and, of course, his classic signature "Young At Heart". Other highlights: a jaunty and crisp "The Way You Look Tonight" and a spirited reading of the Johnny Mercer/Hoagy Carmichael chestnut "In The Cool,Cool, Cool Of The Evening" to compete with Dino's equally fine version of previous years. Master arranger Nelson Riddlemakes another welcome appearance, suprisingly infrequent inthe Reprise years.
