SOUL SWINGERS!
Unplayed MINT 45: CA-BA-DAB/BRIGHTER TOMORROW (Topaz 1315, reissue of 1969 original): Unplayed MINT 45."...virtually nothing is known about Soul Swingers." - notes to Wheedle's Groove box set.
The third single in the highly acclaimed Wheedle's Groove set of ten 45s, issued in 2011. Ca-Ba-Dab is a sizzlin' slab of soul, as unpretentious as short ribs and cornbread, and at least as funky. Topaz was a tiny label helmed by Seattle legend Kearney Barton, who recorded a wide variety of artists spanning several generations and genres (including, in 1967, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson; their two 45s, as "Ann Wilson and The Daybreaks" run in the $100+ range). A hundred bucks is chump-change if you're looking for the ridiculously rare original of this Soul Swingers 45; Manship lists it at $500. If you haven't yet found a 1st pressing, here's an UNPLAYED MINT repop of this scarce gem. Even this reissue is rare...only 2000 of the Wheedle's Groove sets were released worldwide. The single faithfully reproduces the original label (the rubber stamp on both labels reads "Hel-Kirk Productions", who promoted the group; we suspect all copies of this scarce 45 were stamped like this by the promoter). The recording is superbly remastered to give you the sound of the sixties, as if you stepped out of a time machine 46 years ago and bought it at a corner record shop in the "CD" (Central District, where most Seattle black folks lived in '69).
