The only U.S. 45 release of...
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)/If I Needed Someone "For Jukeboxes Only" black vinyl CEMA Special Markets 45 (Capitol 19341 w/2 jukebox title strips, 1996):
UNPLAYED MINT gem!
The song Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) has received short shrift in the United States. Aside from its inclusion on the Rubber Soul LP, it's not often seen on vinyl in this country. Well, count on BeatleDave to set things right. Here's the crazy-rare single of John Lennon's thinly veiled tale of infidelity.
This CEMA Special Markets 45 is often used to replace the green vinyl "FOR JUKEBOXES ONLY!" 45 in sets of the 30 colored vinyl Fabs singles. The original green vinyl version (Capitol #18888) sells for $500 and up (on the few occasions that one is offered). There's only about 650 copies of the green monster known to exist, so collectors assembling a set will add this black vinyl number instead. Unfortunately, Capitol 19341 is also scarce, with about 12,000 pressed, so its price is usually higher than that of the 29 colored vinyl 45s. Supply and demand being what they are, this'll be a $100+ record within a few years...
We're sweetening the deal by including TWO jukebox strips; the standard one (with the subtitle), and a rare strip with the title misspelled "Norweigian". Other sellers charge our price (or more) for this record without the jukebox strips we offer.
John Lennon wrote this tune about an extramarital affair, and later said the lyrics were deliberately ambiguous; he felt guilty about a song that revealed his betrayal of wife Cynthia Lennon. Journalist Maureen Cleve may have been the inspiration for the girl who "once had me". If so, John paid an unintended price for his intimacy with Ms. Cleve; she was the scribe whose 1966 interview with Lennon included the infamous "we're more popular than Jesus now" quote that got him into so much trouble in America. It was this controversy, added to The Beatles' road fatigue, that led them to decide to stop touring. Their last live show, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, was in August 1966, the same year they recorded Norwegian Wood.
Among the rarest U.S. stock-copy Beatles 45s ever issued...
