Humble Pie
'Eat It'
A&M, UK, 1973

THERE CAN be few who would'nt agree that Steve Marriott was the greatest white vocalist of all time. This tiny man with the biggest most soulful voice to have ever walked the boards captivated an entire generation - at first with The Small Faces and then, during the early seventies, with one of the most influential hard rock bands of all time Humble Pie.
1972's blockbusting studio album 'Smokin' elevated the band to superstar status in the US playing to packed out stadiums whilst travelling in the lap of luxury from gig to gig in their own private Jet. Marriott had it all in the palm of his hands but, as has been well documented, he would ultimately squander this opportunity splitting the band up and heading off into the darkest depths of depression.
'Eat It' captures the band at the height of their soul rock fixation containing 3 sides of studio material and one live side recorded at Greens Playhouse, Glasgow (later renamed the Apollo). The studio tracks are brilliantly crafted, featuring Marriott fully submersed in the black preacher character that he first premiered on the classic 'Live Rockin' The Fillmore' album. Naturally the Blackberries feature prominently giving the album an air of total authenticity and most of the songs on side two are well chosen soul covers including a fine studio version of 'Black Cofee' (written by Ike & Tina Turner) and the Ray Charles classic 'I Believe To My Soul' - Marriott never sounding better.
