For sale are two first edition U.S. vinyl releases from the self-styled "percussion genius of Africa", Chaino!
A bit about the musician, one of the most elusive figures of space age pop / Exotica:
Chaino was born in Philadelphia, but he grew up on the South Side of Chicago. After attending grammar school, Chaino left home to see the country. He began playing the bongos and toured "the so-called 'chitlin' circuit of black nightclubs."
According to his brother, George Johnson, Chaino lost touch with his family and "vacillated between the brink of stardom and edge of starvation as he made a name for himself in the late 1940s and '50s as a percussionist."
The two vinyl here feature some of Chaino's early recordings, both released in 1959.
The first is a solo album, the second is Chaino with his African Percussion Safari.
Africana (Dot, DLP 25,240)
Jungle Echoes by Chaino and His African Percussion Safari (Omega, OSL-7).
An amazing pair of records, chalk full of breaks!
Disc for Africana is VG+, graded conservatively with inner sleeve marks but hardly any play wear, faint hiss here and there but noticeable only during quiet parts.
Disc for Jungle Echoes is VG-, clean but may need a bath for a quieter listen - plays with noticeable hiss/crackle in the back ground due to quite a bit of play wear. Some audiophiles might consider the surface noise of this vinyl distracting but not overwhelming, but I think it provides a nice sonic addition to the play throughout and don't mind it in the slightest.
Both jackets are VG+ (minor corner dings to Africana, but otherwise amazing! NOTE: The jacket has the previous owner's name written on the top portion, see pics for more details. Jungle Echoes has light storage wear.)
