Budgie
'In For The Kill'
MCA, UK, 1974
MCF 2546
BY THE time Budgie reached this their fourth album they were firing on all six cylinders. Their first couple of albums were good but held back by p*ss poor production. 'Never Turn Your Back On A Friend' raised the barrier considerably but it's 'In For The Kill' that signaled Budgie's arrival at the gates of hard rock delirium. Guitarist Tony Bourge had really honed his riffing skills to perfection and Shelley's high pitched whine never sounded so wacky. The title track and 'Zoom Club' are colossal slices of pure unadulterated riffing, heavier than lead-weights and more crushing than Sabbaff at their peak. In fact I'd go so far to as to say that Bourge is, pound for pound, a better riffmeister than Iommi. I'll take a lot of flak for that but you know it's true.
With Budgie the heaviosity commences right from the get go. Check out these two titles: 'Crash Course In Brain Surgery' and 'Hammer And Tongs'. You'd probably imagine that they were total piledriving anthems with barely a moments respite. Well, you'd be 100% accurate with that assessment. That's Budgie, the greatest power trio that ever stalked and walked the face of the planet.
