I am not a professional seller. I only use M for a brand new record/disc. A NM item will basically look like a disc that has just been removed from the shrink wrap. For any grade lower than NM-, I will give a description of any major issues that I think may affect playback. In general I use visual grading because I know that even a change of cartridge can affect how much surface noise comes to the forefront. For reference, I have a Linn LP12 with a Denon cartridge, Linn electronics and ATC speakers.
