Nazareth

'Razamanaz'

Mooncrest, UK, 1973

CREST 1

NAZARETH'S COMING of age album. 'Razamanaz' showcases the band locking into a full on hard rock groove with guitars a blazing and vocalist Dan McCafferty literally bursting his trousers as he screams the house down. Produced expertly, by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, the balance between material and performance is perfectly executed allowing every member of the band to shine brightly.

Kicking off with the seminal title track the fist-in-the-face approach is made perfectly clear and cleverly they don't take their foot off the gas peddle for the entire first side. 'Alcatraz' and 'Woke Up This Morning' compound the energy level but it's the Woody Guthrie penned 'Vigilante Man' that ups the anti considerably. If you've ever heard the original you'll be gob smacked at what Nazareth managed to do with this track - injecting it with high octane jet fuel and lowering up the tempo to sound like a cross between Black Sabbath and ZZ Top.

Other choice tracks include 'Bad Bad Boy', a major hit single for the band, and 'Broken Down Angel' which, again, was a hit single -  a track not losing any of its atmospheric blues based origins. Man of the match? Clearly its Dan McCafferty's whose vocals are so astounding that you can imagine the blood vessels in his face were about to explode with rage.

Highly recommended if you've never had the chance to hear this one before and its an original first press on the Mooncrest label.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
