AllMusic Review by Matthew Greenwald
Although this album may have been a contractual obligation, there is no doubt that Emitt Rhodes did not take the task of recording American Dream lightly. After disbanding his first group, the Merry-Go-Round, Rhodes still owed A&M Records another album. Several new sessions were held, and along with a few old tracks such as the remarkable "You're a Very Lovely Woman," they make up the body of this fine, if fragmented album. "Mother Earth" is without a doubt one of Rhodes' McCartney-influenced masterpieces, led by a strident 12-string acoustic guitar and a masterful lead vocal. For the first (and possibly only) time in his career, Rhodes utilized session musicians, but he used the very best. Awesome playing from Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel, Drake Levin, Joel Larson, and others lift this track and others to a level of greatness. This album may be seen as a sort of a warm-up for Rhodes' brilliant, self-recorded Dunhill albums.

Emitt Rhodes passed away on July 19, 2020. His Los Angeles Times obituary states: "To fulfill the Merry-Go-Round’s recording contract to A&M, the label released an album titled “American Dream” featuring a set of Rhodes’ solo performances amplified by Hollywood session musicians. Rhodes disapproved of the release and was allowed little input in the process."

Please contact us if you have any questions about the auction. We will respond as quickly as possible.

We try to grade the condition of a vinyl record conservatively . Records may be considered flat, or not warped, unless otherwise noted. If one side of a record is in better shape than the other, two grades will appear. Records and covers are graded separately.

M = Mint. In all but the rarest cases, still sealed. If we know that an open record has never been played, and the rating otherwise applies, it will be graded mint.
NM = Near mint, or unplayed condition. Cover is near perfect, new looking, with no surface or ring wear.
EX = Only slight signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks which do not distract significantly from the sound. Cover has only slight surface wear and is still in nice collectible condition.
VG+ = Evidence of play, with moderate surface wear and some minor noise - still plays well. Cover is solid with no breaks but may have minor surface wear or some ring wear.
VG = Overall wear, but no skips or serious defects. May be somewhat noisy during quiet passages. Cover is worn, with considerable ring wear, and may have partially broken edges.
VG- = Playable, but both the record and cover are well worn.
G or G+ = Poor or Rough condition. Holefiller only!
