Most Americans didn't become aware of The Hollies until Bus Stop & Stop Stop Stop hit the U.S. Top 10 in late 1966, but they'd been major UK stars since their first single in 1963.  The band's 1965 cover of George Harrison's If I Needed Someone became a dust-up when George publicly called this version "rubbish" & snidely characterized the Hollies as mere "session men".  In 2013, almost 50 years later, Graham Nash was still pissed:

"In those days, tweaking a Beatle was like blaspheming the pope...every English group owed them a huge debt, but I had no intention of kissing their asses.  Besides, last I looked, the Hollies were holding down places on the same Top 10 as the Beatles, so pardon me if you don't like our fucking record but keep it to yourself, if you please."

The Hollies' If I Needed Someone single stalled at #20 on the UK pop chart, their worst placement in awhile.  Conventional wisdom held this poor showing was largely due to the criticism by George Harrison (& John Lennon, who never really liked Hollies records to begin with).

Frankly, we can't tell what all the fuss was about; this 45 is faithful to the original arrangement & Hollies harmonies are spot-on as usual...
