(..LIMONADA....) by ( LIMONADA )...... ....( a fan says:Limonada's music sure is whimsical in a fun way. The band was basically a side project from a few members from El Kinto, as they decided to spin off in a more colourful direction than that of their parent band. With all the attention given to British Psychedelia (you know, early Pink Floyd, The Blossom Toes, Tomorrow and a few more) and even to Tropicália I find rather strange the utter oblivion so many interesting, accessible and all around lovable South American bands from the same era are confined to. Surely a revival of sorts must be in waiting for all these bands to spring from Peru, Argentina or Uruguay. Because a cursory glance at even usually thorough guides to 60's music reveals little if any of the depth and diversity to storm through the spanish speaking side of the continent. From Los Shakers' candombeat to Los Saicos' garage punk, Laghonia's psych pop or Almendra's lovely songs there was quite a bit to be enthralled by. And where do Limonada fall into? Imagine the circus-like feel of some British psych, add a few flutes and then filter that through the breeziness and ultra smooth singing only someone born in a place like Montevideo could ever develop. The songs are short, cute, humorous, aren't afraid of applying mindbending sonic tricks and usually have some traces of an unusual melody to boot. I've seen some call it a disjointed mess but I'm quite fond of its flutes/horns/harpsichords/guitars/cukoo clocks attack, kinda like a concept album featuring pop songs that run a gamut of one's moods. "Pies Descalzos" and "Dejenme Dormir" might be my favorites here but it does work best as a whole. Perhaps not the best place to begin exploring South America's late 60's / early 70's music but a nice little record nonetheless and yet another slap on the face of anyone who willfully ignores anything that doesn't have the Anglo Saxon axis as its origin.
