Gustav Mahler graduated from the Vienna Conservatory in 1878. Following his tenure with Leipzig Opera in his home country of Germany, Mahler moved to Prague in 1885 to take up a post with the Neues Deutsches Theater. In 1897, Mahler became director of the Vienna Court Opera. Next, become director of New York's Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic at the turn of the twentieth century. On 21 February 1911, Mahler conducted his final concert at New York's Carnegie Hall.
Mahler then became one of the most frequently performed and recorded of all composers, a position he has sustained into the 21st century. His fans and this collection includes Leonard Bernstein, James Levine, Georg Solti, Sir Simon Rattle, Andre Previn, Zubin Mehta and Klaus Tennstedt.
