ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Rare sealed original 1977 vinyl LP “The Stranger” by Billy Joel released by Columbia Records (catalog number JC34987) with original hype sticker affixed to the front shrink-wrap.

I do not believe that this is a first pressing, because the hype sticker on first pressings only mentioned one track, namely “Featuring The Single Just The Way You Are”. This is probably a second pressing because the hype sticker lists three tracks rather than just the one. But note that the hype sticker doesn’t say that the three songs listed are singles or hits; it only says “Featuring”, which distinguishes itself from later pressing hype stickers that tout the fact that the album “Contains 4 Smash Hits”.

Some other tell-tale points that confirm this is an original from 1977 are:

1. There is no UPC (Universal Product Code) printed on the album jacket because the sales barcode was not used by Columbia Records in 1977.

2. There is a logo on the bottom corner of the back cover that reads “100 years of recorded sound 1877-1977”. This logo was placed on album jackets in 1977 in celebration of the centennial of Columbia Records.
