Roots & Herbs is a album by , recorded in 1961 at the same sessions which produced , but not released on the label until 1970.
This is solid Hard Bop - Taken from sessions for "Freedom Rider", this was recorded in '61 but not released until '70; this features the strongest Messengers' line up, which included Morgan, Shorter, Timmons, and Merritt, performing Shorter originals. Walter Davis Jr also appears in place of Timmons on a couple of tracks. They all play solidly throughout with a great energy I haven't found anything by this particular ensemble which you shouldn't seek out.
