ZZ Top
'Fandango'
London, UK, 1975
SHU 8482
HAVING CONSOLIDATED their impact with the impressive benchmark recording 'Tres Hombres', ZZ TOP implemented a stop gap measure by issuing this half live/half studio album. The live side is full-on boogie containing tracks not previously put to tape in any studio.
The other side is another matter altogether. Here we find some of ZZ Top's all time greatest work with material that could easily have been included on the previous album 'Tres Hombres'. Indeed, both production (once again by Bill Ham and engineered by Terry Manning) and song writing are amongst the best things that the band ever created. 'Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings' is a mad low down shuffle with customary vocal growl and triumphant guitar licks from blues master Billy Gibbons. Similar uptempo rockers included 'Balinese' a kick arse guitar jammer with suitably engaging lyrical euphenisms and 'Heard It On The X', a ten gallon shot of high octane boogie. Elsewhere you have 'Blue Jean Blues' which allows Gibbons to peel out a succession of quality blues licks. Best lyrical content however belongs to 'Mexican Blackbird', a tale of beaten up pick up trucks, warm summer breezes, Mexican beer and a raven haired beauty. Of course the greatest achievement here is the universally known and highly covered 'Tush', ZZ TOP's crushing power boogie tour de force.
