Man
'Rhinos, Winos & Lunatics'
United Artists, UK, 1974
UAG 29631
WELSH WEST coast rockers return with arguably their most commercial album including the turntable hit 'Taking The Easy Way Out' flessed out with killer chorus, infectious rhythm and spindly guitar from the fingers and thumbs of half man half genius Deke Leonard. Other highlights include the Steely Danesque 'Thunder And Lightning Kid', the beautifully sublime accoustic 'California Silks And Satins' and 'Four Day Louise', a song that manages to get half way through before the vocals kick in.
Side two is equally as perverse, er, I mean diverse. More Steely Dan-a-like moves with 'Intro/Kerosene', one of the bands greatest compositions and certainly most vocally sophisticated. Its long and its truly spellbinding and it perfectly sets the scene for 'Scotch Corner', a track that could have been written and performed by Yes had they come from Wales and smoked a lot or weed.
As complete an album as you'll find from this era and one that should be compulsory listening to any aspiring lover of seventies rock.
