Anathema formed in Liverpool in 1990, initially under the name of Pagan Angel and grew from a heavy doom/death metal style act into a more progressive and melodic group, blending rock elements with strong atmospherics inspired by classic acts such as Pink Floyd and Radiohead. The band signed with Peaceville Records after recording the 'All Faith Is Lost' demo in 1991, and are known for being part of the Peaceville doom metal trinity in the early 1990's (alongside fellow UK bands Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride). 'A Fine Day to Exit' was the band's 6th album and was released in 2001. It was produced by Nick Griffiths, notable for his previous work with Pink Floyd. The album displays a further evolution from the more rock/metal-focussed style of their former releases, with a dynamic blend of heavy rock anthems, and softer atmospherics, notable on tracks such as 'Release' and the single, 'Pressure'. The line-up featured Les Smith (ex Cradle of Filth) on keyboards, and Dave Pybus on bass, later joining Cradle of Filth. The artwork was constructed by Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia). 'A Fine Day to Exit' is presented on gatefold heavyweight vinyl.
