Hello & welcome to our eBay store.
For rabid Tool fans (I'm one of them), Opiate is something of a curio in the band's discography. This is Tool before the band kicked off its first bout of legal troubles and began composing opus-length songs. While the metal influences are strong, Opiate marks the height of Tool's dabbling with hardcore punk. It's also fun to see the band's three core members in their early stages. Carey's drumming is focused but lacks the technical mastery of later releases. Jones's guitar playing is much less experimental here, yet the trademark ominousness and hammering techniques are in place. As for Maynard, the songwriting doesn't have the heady (and sometimes cryptic) depth of future albums, though his vocal power and ability to alternate between soothing melody and fierce wail are no different. The album also represented some firsts for the band. First criticisms of religion and society and, of course, first ridiculous hidden track. While Undertow would ultimately prove to be more cathartic and groundbreaking, Opiate hinted at upcoming greatness with "Hush," "Cold and Ugly," and "Jerk-Off." While it may not compare as favorably to Tool's best work, Opiate should be required listening for Tool fans. We have been providing great bargins and quality merchandise on eBay since 1999.
