It is Stevens' third studio album and features songs referencing places, events, and persons related to the U.S. state of Michigan.The album is the first in Stevens' "The 50 States" project, a planned series of 50 albums to encompass all 50 states of the United States. Stevens only released two state albums before admitting the project was a "promotional gimmick".
