The record marked a major shift from the industrial metal and alternative styles of the band's earlier efforts, into an experimentation with 1970s glam, plus industrial and electronic rock styles. More commercially successful than its predecessor, the album debuted at No.1 in the US and across most of Europe too. The Mechanical Animals Tour began on 25th October '98 in Kansas, and concluded on 31st January 1999 in Perth, Australia. According to most sources, among the finest dates on the tour was the group's performance at Sydney, Australia's Big Day Out festival on January 23rd '99, at which Marilyn Manson put on a quite extraordinary show.
