"Happy Trails" - John Cipollina, Gary Duncan, David Freiberg (b, g, voc); Greg Elmore (dr, perc)

Without a doubt, this successor to Quicksilver Messenger Service's self-titled debut album is most likely to reflect the style of the band's live performances, celebrated by critics and enthusiastic fans alike. The album focuses in particular on extensive revisions of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" and "Mona", as well as the not so much praised but no less intense contribution by guitarist / singer Gary Duncan, the song "Calvary". This album is the last one Quicksilver Messenger Service recorded in its original version as a quartet. The joint performance of John Cipollina (guitar / vocals), Greg Elmore (percussion), David Freiberg (bass / vocals) and the previously mentioned Gary Duncan is still an uncanny spirit of psychedelic looseness, without ever being bored or even im to become at least pretentious. The epic "Who Do You Love?" Suite, which spans an entire record, is divided into a common intro and coda for the entire band, as well as four, distinctly different, contributions from the respective band members - the continuing inventiveness of Quicksilver Messenger Service is particularly pronounced here come to light. All of the instrumental skills and a supernatural interaction allow them to weave seamlessly into the main theme and to move away from it. Nevertheless, there is enough space so that every musician can stand in the spotlight for an uncompromising solo. Mona "and his companion" Calvary "continue the chosen style. Here the band members form a more unified unit, some of Cipollina's best and most unforgettable guitar riffs can be heard on this track. None of his contemporaries from Bayarea of San Francisco could conjure up the ghosts of the guitar like this. An excellent example of his individuality is the frenetic "Maiden Of The Cancer Moon" - rising from the fading "Mona". The anxiety and energy in Cipollina's guitar work, layering line upon line of technical phrasing, could easily correspond to Frank Zappa's style. The short title piece, a reinterpretation of Roy Rogers 'and Dale Evans' "Happy Trails", appears almost meaningless in the whirl of such creativity. The piece clears up after the fireworks of tones and is an 'adieu' to these very special Fab Four of psychedelics.
