"Hooker 'n Heat" - John Lee Hooker (g, voc); Alan Wilson (p, hca); Henry Vestine (g); Antonio de la Barreda (b); Adolfo de la Parra (dr)

When this 2LP set was first released in January 1971, Canned Heat had returned to its Rhythm'n'Blues roots. The line-up of the band changed only slightly with the return of Henry 'Sunflower' Vestine, Antonio 'Tony' de la Barreda on bass and the experienced Aldolfo de la Parra on drums. Unfortunately, it was also the last appearance by the band's co-founder, Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who died in September 1970.
Despite all restraint, "Hooker 'n Heat" is a common work, divided between unaccompanied solos by John Lee Hooker, pieces by the duo Hooker / Wilson and Allen five as a complete band. And it is precisely these collaborations that shine as the greatest works of the band or of the soloist. Even though the band is the eponym for the LP - the idea for the title "Hooker 'n Heat" probably came from the band's record label - you shouldn't be fooled, because Hooker controls with his rough and percussive guitar riffs that are his trademark the whole combo. The epic "Boogie Chilling No. 2 "extends over 11 1/2 minutes and is characterized by the same 'Kraftmeierei' as the original, with the help of Canned Heat the verses ignite and simmer on the subsequent instrumental parts, in which there is no weak moment.
The band contributes most of the success of this session to the repertoire and planning. She was able to present Hooker in a variety of different combinations, as a soloist in his own characteristic idiom, in a series of imaginative duets with the older Al Wilson, and as the leader of the entire band (apart from Hite, who worked on the project, and his infectious humor from the control room) dirty boogie woogies righteous for some units. Canned Heat made no secret of the fact that their entire boogie series, which spanned three albums, drew inspiration from Hooker's work, so working with him was only natural. Worth mentioning is the earth-shattering power of Antonio de la Barreda and Adolfo de la Parra, Heat's Latin American rhythm section, and the studio technology, maybe a little too flawless for Hooker - but nowadays nobody just records in a barn. Hooker fans will appreciate this record, as will the Heat fans, and that's a lot of people. Let's boogie!
